Though often overlooked due to their unusual shape and pungent odor, stinkhorn mushrooms play a vital role in forest ecosystems. These fascinating fungi are saprophytes—organisms that feed on decaying organic matter. By breaking down leaf litter and other dead material, stinkhorns help recycle nutrients back into the soil, supporting healthy plant growth.
Rather than harming living plants, stinkhorns enhance soil fertility and contribute to a balanced ecosystem. Their presence is a sign of rich, active soil life—and a reminder that even the strangest organisms can serve an important purpose in nature.
These mushrooms had my eye on making an entrance into botanical work, as it is something that always caught my eye.
All the modelling and sculpting was done in Blender and the texturing in Substance Painter.
It was particularly challenging to find ways on making this botanical look, and it was worth it, the end result is ever so close to the picture I took from my botanical art book :) Will be adding many more botanical projects from here on out ;)
